As part of my Brazil vacation, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a children’s daycare centre located in a favela in Rio de Janeiro. This was one of the best, life changing experiences of my life and I was so happy that we had the opportunity to do so!
If you are not familiar with favelas, basically they are low income areas (also referred to as slums) often located on the city edge with houses going up hills. They are cramped areas where sometimes it’s difficult to get electricity and running water.
On the day we went out to volunteer, it was perfect weather; the sun was shining and all the ladies in the tour group were excited to give back. On our way there our tour guides shared with us a brief history of favelas and how they came to be. They told us how life is for residents and some of the challenges they may face. We were educated on safety and how to conduct ourselves while there.
Upon entry to the favela, we were greeted by a local resident who walked us to the daycare centre that was located high up in the hills. Once we got there we were greeted by the woman who created the daycare centre for the children who live in the favela. She spoke to us with the aid of a translator and shared her story with how the centre came to be. She was so kind, and welcoming and was excited to have us there.
We spent the whole day volunteering. Activities ranged from helping to prepare meals for the kids, to watching the kids, teaching them some English, cleaning and renovating two rooms. Yes, we renovated two rooms! Two storage rooms were transformed, one into a play area and the other into a play area and library lounge.
One of the great memories I have was seeing the kids eyes light up at the sight of the drone! They had never seen a drone before and watching it take off was extremely exciting to them.
Volunteering in Brazil gave me more than what I had expected. I though I was there to help, but they ended up helping me instead. I was reminded of what pure joy is, without the need of materialistic things. I was reminded of how good it feels to give without expectation of anything in return. I was reminded of how fortunate I am and to share my blessings with others. I was reminded that regardless of any barriers we are all humans and its important to respect and treat others kindly.
I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to give with a group of ladies who were also intent on giving. Thank you to OneLove Travel Club for organizing such an amazing experience.
