Complex Carbohydrates vs. Simple Carbohydrates

What are Carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are caloric energy that your body needs to function. They are composed of sugars, fiber and starch. Carbohydrates affect everything; your brain, metabolism, digestive system and muscle to name a few! Carbohydrates are necessary for the human body to function and they should never be avoided.

Complex Carbohydrates

Complex Carbohydrates are my preferred source of carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates have starch whose molecules are composed of more than two sugar molecules. The composition of complex carbohydrates are so nourishing because when eaten, they provide the body with a high amounts of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Consuming complex  carbohydrates help you to feel fuller for a long period of time because it takes awhile for your body to digest it.

Complex Carbohydrate Foods Include

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits such as apples and pears
  • Legumes such as beans and peas
  • Whole grains such as oatmeal and quinoa

Simple Carbohydrates

Simple carbohydrates also provide your body with the energy that it needs. This starch is made up of up to two sugar molecules. Their fiber content and overall nutritional value are very low when compared to complex carbohydrates because they are mainly composed of sugars. As a result, they do provide the body with energy but, they digest so quickly within the body that you end up feeling hungry faster and end up eating more.

Simple Carbohydrate Foods Include

  • Candy
  • White bread
  • Processed foods
  • Soft drinks and fruit juice
  • Sugar such as brown and table sugar and honey

On my healthy living journey I’ve had to change my diet to include more foods that contain complex carbohydrates to better sustain my body and improve my fitness goals.
