Pizzeria Libretto knows how to make some great pizza. This restaurant has three locations in the Greater Toronto Area (on Danforth, University and Ossington Avenue). A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to check out their menu and I was not disappointed! During my visit to the restaurant, we began our meal with an appetizer; the Buttermilk Calamari Romesco in a red pepper almond sauce. The appetizer was by far one of the best presentations I’ve seen of fried calamari. And the taste was perfect! The calamari was dredged in buttermilk; this made the coating crunchy yet tender to eat as you bit into it. The red pepper almond sauce provided a unique complement to the calamari. It was my first time eating this appetizer without a white dipping sauce and I enjoyed it.
As my entrée I decide to go with the Nduja pizza (Nduja Sausage, Tomato, Garlic, Oregano, Basil, Mozzarella, Stracciatella). As I sit here writing up this post I wish I could experience the tastes that exploded in my mouth when I bit into my first slice of this pizza. Let’s start with the crust; it was a thin crispy yet slightly chewy crust that soaked up all the flavours of the pizza sauce without becoming soggy. The pizza sauce was sweet and you could definitely taste the freshness of the tomatoes used, along with the complimentary seasonings that were put into it. The chosen cheeses for this dish went well with the sauce because they provided just the right amount of a creamy cheesy texture that did not take away from the rest of the ingredients. When I ate the Nduja pizza it was my first time eating Nduja sausage and I was not disappointed. This sausage complemented the other ingredients and also added in a slight kick to the pizza with its spicy flavours. For dessert, I decided to go with one scoop of the Strawberry gelato. It was a light, sweet, creamy dessert that was great to end my meal off with.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Pizzeria Libretto and look forward to trying out their other dishes.
